Lutron, Ketra and motorized shading

Lighting that is designed, not just installed.

County Line Electric designs and installs Lutron HomeWorks lighting control, Ketra tunable light and Lutron motorized shades for homes in the Conejo Valley, Malibu, Calabasas, the Westside and Santa Barbara. The electricians who wire the house program the scenes, so the lighting plan in the drawings is the lighting you live with.

The idea

One keypad instead of a wall of switches.

A well lit house is layered: ambient light that fills the room, task light where you cook and read, accent light on the art and the architecture. Lighting control is what makes those layers usable. Instead of eight dimmers by the kitchen door, one keypad with scenes: Cook, Dinner, Evening, Off. Instead of remembering which switch does what in the hall at midnight, a path lights itself. Instead of harsh overheads at the end of the day, the whole house warms and dims as the evening goes on.

Lutron has built these systems for decades and County Line has installed them for most of that time. HomeWorks is the whole-home platform: centralized dimming panels in a utility room, keypads engraved for each room, shades and the automation system all on one processor. Ketra adds light that changes color temperature through the day, from a cool morning white to a candle-warm evening, from the same fixtures.

Why an electrician

The dimming panel is electrical work. So is everything attached to it.

A Lutron HomeWorks system is a set of dimming panels in a utility room with every lighting circuit in the house landed in them, keypad wiring to every room, shade power and control runs, and a processor tied to the network. All of that is wiring, and the quality of the wiring is the quality of the system. County Line does the rough-in and the Lutron installation with the same crew, on new construction and on remodels, so the fixture schedule, the circuiting and the keypad layout are one plan instead of three.

On an existing house, County Line surveys the wiring first and tells you honestly whether a full HomeWorks system makes sense or whether a wireless Lutron system will do the job with far less disruption.

Lighting and shading questions

Does County Line Electric install Lutron HomeWorks?

Yes. County Line Electric designs and installs Lutron HomeWorks whole-home lighting control systems, including the centralized dimming panels, processor, keypads, Ketra fixtures and Lutron motorized shades, in new construction and existing homes across Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties.

What is Ketra lighting?

Ketra is Lutron's tunable lighting line. Ketra lamps and fixtures change color temperature and intensity through the day, from bright cool light in the morning to warm, dim light at night, from the same fixture. County Line installs Ketra downlights, linear fixtures and lamps as part of a Lutron HomeWorks system.

Can motorized shades be added to an existing home?

Yes. Lutron offers battery and wired motorized shades. On an existing home County Line looks at the windows and the wiring and recommends wired shades where power can be run cleanly and battery shades where it cannot. Fabrics include roller, roman, cellular, sheer, solar and blackout.

How much does a Lutron lighting control system cost?

It depends on the number of lighting circuits, keypads and shades, and on whether the house is new construction or a remodel. County Line gives a written proposal after a consultation and a look at the plans or the house. The consultation is free.

Where does County Line install Lutron systems?

Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Hidden Hills, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills, Bel Air and Brentwood, Studio City and Encino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Montecito.

How a lighting project runs

From the first conversation to the last scene.

  1. 01

    Consultation

Which rooms, how they are used, what the house has today, whether a designer is involved. At the house, no charge.

  2. 02

    Design

A fixture schedule and a control plan: zones, keypads, shades, Ketra where it earns its place. Reviewed with the designer if there is one.

  3. 03

    Proposal

Written, itemized: panels, processor, keypads, fixtures, shades, programming, inclusions and exclusions.

  4. 04

    Rough-in or survey

New construction: panels and keypad runs go in with the electrical. Existing house: a survey decides wired versus wireless before anything is quoted.

  5. 05

    Trim and programming

Devices, engraving, scenes written with the owner and the designer in the room. Then a walkthrough.

  6. 06

    After

Scene changes as the household settles in. A keypad that says Dinner should do what you mean by dinner.

Wired or wireless

The question every existing house asks first.

Lutron makes two kinds of system. HomeWorks is wired: every lighting circuit runs to dimming panels in a utility room, and the keypads are low-voltage devices on a bus. It is the system for new construction and for a remodel that opens the walls, because it is the most reliable and the most capable. Lutron's wireless systems put the dimmer in the wall box where the switch was and talk to a processor by radio. They are the right answer for a finished house that is not being gutted, and they are a great deal better than the smart bulbs and plug-in dimmers that get abandoned after a year.

County Line installs both and tells you which one the house can take. The survey is where that is decided, and it is free.
