Electrical contractor in Malibu.

Twenty-one miles of coast, its own city hall, the Coastal Zone, SCE shutoffs every windy week of fire season, and houses that deserve better than a contractor who is guessing. County Line Electric has wired custom homes in Malibu for years and installs the standby generators and Lutron systems that make living there work.

What is different here

Its own permits, the Coastal Commission, and no gas on half the streets.

Malibu incorporated in 1991 and runs its own building department, so electrical permits are City of Malibu permits and the inspectors are the city's. Nearly all of Malibu is also inside the California Coastal Zone, which adds a layer of review to anything that changes the outside of a property, and that can include where a generator pad or an exterior panel goes. Power comes from Southern California Edison, and SCE's Public Safety Power Shutoffs hit Malibu harder and more often than almost anywhere else in Los Angeles County, because the whole city sits against the Santa Monica Mountains in a very high fire hazard severity zone. Large parts of Malibu have no natural gas main, which means a standby generator runs on propane and the tank is part of the design.

County Line Electric works in Malibu on new construction, on rebuilds after the Franklin Fire of December 2024 and the eastern edge of the Palisades Fire, and on generators, Lutron lighting and automation in existing homes from Point Dume to the Colony. The office in Newbury Park is on the other side of the mountains, about forty minutes over Kanan or Malibu Canyon.

Standby power

In Malibu a generator is not a luxury. It is the water pump.

Many Malibu homes are on wells or booster pumps, on septic systems with pumps, behind electric gates and at the end of long driveways. When SCE shuts the power off for a wind event, all of that stops. A Generac standby generator with an automatic transfer switch keeps the pumps, the gate, the refrigerators and the network running until the utility comes back, and in Malibu that can be days.

County Line sizes the unit to the house from a load calculation, handles the Coastal Zone questions about the pad location, and coordinates the propane tank and line where there is no gas main. A written estimate within 24 hours of the site visit. The Malibu generator page goes deeper.

Custom homes and rebuilds

Estate-scale electrical on the coast.

Malibu custom homes are large, spread out and full of systems: guest houses, pool and spa equipment, gates and cameras, outdoor lighting and audio, Lutron control throughout, a generator and often solar and batteries. County Line is the electrical sub on those houses for builders and architects, carrying the scope from the temporary power through the final. Since the fires, that includes rebuilds on the Pacific Coast Highway side of the Palisades Fire and in the Franklin Fire area around Serra Retreat and Malibu Canyon. New construction in Malibu describes that work.

Malibu questions

Does County Line Electric work on fire rebuilds in Malibu?

How far is County Line Electric from Malibu?

About forty minutes. County Line Electric is based in Newbury Park, over the Santa Monica Mountains from Malibu by way of Kanan Dume Road or Malibu Canyon Road, and has worked on Malibu custom homes for years.
