Electrical contractor in Altadena.

Altadena is rebuilding thousands of homes at once. County Line Electric is one of the licensed electrical contractors wiring them: unincorporated Los Angeles County permits, Southern California Edison service, a complete electrical system to current code, and the standby power the next windstorm will test.

What is different here

Unincorporated county, Edison service, and a whole town going back up.

Altadena is not a city. It is an unincorporated community of Los Angeles County above Pasadena, which means electrical permits go through Los Angeles County Public Works, Building and Safety, under the county's rebuild program, and the inspectors are county inspectors. Power is Southern California Edison, whose equipment and shutoff policies in the foothills are part of the story of the Eaton Fire and part of what every rebuilt house has to plan for. The scale is different too: the Eaton Fire destroyed thousands of structures in Altadena in January 2025, so the rebuild is not one house on a block but whole blocks, with the county, the utility and dozens of contractors working the same streets.

County Line Electric is a Ventura County company and Altadena is the far end of its map, about an hour and a half from Newbury Park. Jeff Tucker put the crew on Eaton Fire rebuilds because the work is exactly what County Line does best, ground-up electrical on a custom house, and because the demand for licensed electrical contractors who will show up for the full job outran what the local market could supply. Crews work Altadena jobs in phases, on site for the rough-in and the finish, not driving out for an hour of work.

The rebuild

What an Altadena rebuild needs from its electrician.

Early contact with SCE for temporary power on the cleared lot and for the new permanent service, because utility lead times set the schedule. A service entrance and panel sized for a 2025 house: EV charging, induction, heat pumps, and a standby generator or battery and the critical loads panel that goes with it. Rough-in to the current California Electrical Code, which is stricter than what most of the lost houses were wired under, with arc-fault and ground-fault protection throughout. Low-voltage pathways for network, cameras and audio. Then finish, the county final and a labeled panel.

Many Altadena rebuilds are being done by owners who want to come back to the same street, working with a builder or acting as their own contractor. County Line works both ways. The Altadena rebuild page walks through the sequence and what the county's rebuild program means for the electrical.

Plain speaking

What County Line does not claim in Altadena.

  • It is not a local Pasadena-area company and does not pretend to be. It is a Ventura County contractor that has taken on Eaton Fire rebuilds and staffs them properly.
  • It does not give insurance advice. It gives an itemized electrical proposal your adjuster can read.
  • It does not promise an SCE reconnection date. It files early and relays what the utility says.
  • It does not price a rebuild without the plans and a look at the lot.

Altadena questions

Who issues electrical permits for rebuilding in Altadena?

Los Angeles County. Altadena is an unincorporated community, so building and electrical permits for Eaton Fire rebuilds are issued by Los Angeles County Public Works, Building and Safety, through the county's rebuild program, and inspections are done by county inspectors. Electric service is from Southern California Edison.

Does County Line Electric work on Eaton Fire rebuilds in Altadena?

Yes. County Line Electric wires homes being rebuilt in Altadena after the January 2025 Eaton Fire: temporary power, new SCE service, a complete electrical system to the current California Electrical Code, standby generators and the lighting and automation the owner wants. It works as the electrical subcontractor to builders and directly for owner-builders.

How far is County Line Electric from Altadena?

About an hour and a half. County Line Electric is based in Newbury Park in Ventura County. On Altadena rebuilds the crew works in phases and is on site for the duration of the rough-in and the finish rather than commuting for short visits.

Should a rebuilt Altadena house have a standby generator?

County Line recommends planning for one. The Altadena foothills are subject to Southern California Edison shutoffs during wind events, and a Generac standby generator or a battery system with a critical loads panel is far cheaper to build into the new service than to add later.
